In 1874 this magnificent mansion was built as a wedding gift for Harry Packer by his father Asa. Asa Packer was the founder of Lehigh Valley Railroad and Lehigh University.
In 1880, after his father's death, Harry added the front veranda and the study wing. These additions were designed by renowned Quaker architect Addison Hutton. The veranda is constructed of New York Blue stone and still boasts its original Mahogany ceiling and tile floor. Herter Brothers of New York City were commissioned to finish the interior following the renovations.
In 1983 the mansion was purchased by Robert and Patricia Handwerk. The house was in disrepair when they bought it. There was no plumbing or heating in the house. There was electricity on the first floor and the roof was about to cave in. After many years of blood, sweat and tears it has returned to its former glory.
The Harry Packer Mansion has been a bed & breakfast for over twenty years. It is operated by Pat and Bob with their son Taylor and his fiance Kristen. Taylor and Kristen opened Libations Lounge in December of 2009. The lounge offers a fine selection of wine, beer and spirits.
