What a treasure to behold when one goes to the National Gallery of Art. You can stroll down the art filled halls and take hours or moments to view each piece of work of art. You can go on a number of tours in which each have emphasis on a certain subject such as artist Georgia O'Keeffe's or learn about an extensive collection as the Italian Renaissance.

Activities are continually happening at the Gallery. Hands on workshops are available. You take a tour of the gallery than participate in studio session which includes using materials about the art that you learned about in your interactive tour. Some are geared for the season such as the winter drop in program. Others are ongoing like the storytelling which including an easy hands on activity.

A vast display of paintings and works of sculpture are seen through the magnificent gallery. Travel through different time periods, as you learn through the knowledge based exhibitions and view vast number of collections. The collections are ever growing and a new building was added to house more exhibitions and collections. Hours, even days can be spent in looking at the artwork. Exhibitions come and change throughout the year. Many donations and time has been spent to bring about these fabulous works of art. Collections can be found in painting, sculpture, works on paper, photographs, decorative art, and architecture.

If you want to absorb the atmosphere plus breath in the fresh air, the ice skating rink is readily available mid-November through mid-March. Music can be heard while you brush the ice with your skates. The sculpture garden is right there to behold while sitting at the Pavilion cafe which gives a wide open view of the magnificent gardens.

The envisioned sculpture gardens have pathways which extend the vision of many people as they look outward and upward at the many forms of sculptures from a “Spider” to massive, weathered pieces of wood. You can choose to briskly walk through or linger to read about each subject. The display of horticulture may cause you to linger as you take in the delicious aroma plus learn some gardening tips.

To enjoy the National Gallery of Art with another of your senses, you can attend a magnificent concert. Music played at the concerts often reflects on the time period of famous artwork or where it was lovingly made in such places as France, Brazil, etc. You will want to come to many concerts not only to hear classics from Bach and Beethoven but, to listen to a variety of different instruments used in any given concerts including guitars or beautiful voices in song.

A continual showing of films can be viewed from documentaries to classic cinema. Each film is free but, seating is limited. The educational films will fill you with a new appreciation for art. You can view the calendar of events online to find everything from exhibition films to art films.

The National Gallery of Art, found on the National Mall between 3rd and 7th Streets at Constitution Avenue NW, is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Gallery is closed December 25 and January 1

Shopping at the Gallery consists of three intriguing shops. You can venture to the the West Building and find ready reproductions, gifts, gorgeous jewelry, and accessories. The Bookstore offers wonderful literature on architecture photography and other art related material. Right next to the Bookstore is the Children’s Shop with toys, games, and most importantly art supplies for the aspiring young artist.
 
The Pavilion Cafe has indoor seating and is open throughout the year. They offer a variety of superb dishes including an imported cheese and fruit tray.
 
Pavilion Café Hours (mid-November through mid-March) Monday–Thursday, 10:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. Friday–Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. Sunday, 11:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
 
The Sculpture Garden has six entrances and is surrounded by an extensive metal fence with ornate marble piers and plinths. The main attraction is the flowing fountain which is used as an ice skating rink in the winter.

The ice-skating rink is opened Monday–Thursday, 10:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m., Friday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m.,Sunday, 11:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. It will close at 5:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Eve. It is closed December 25 and January 1
