1857 Florida House InnAmelia Island, FloridaThe Florida House Inn bed and breakfast, located on Amelia Island in the very heart of the Fernandina Beach Historic District, is Florida's oldest surviving hotel.
Since 1857, when the Florida Railroad opened the Florida House, a long list of special guests has sought the genteel hospitality of our inn. We have hosted such notables as Ulysses S. Grant, Cuban poet and freedom fighter Jose Marti, plus many film stars including Mary Pickford, and Laurel & Hardy. The list includes many visits by Rockefellers and Carnegies and other famous Americans. During its 19th century heyday, the Florida beach bustled with commerce. Fortunes were made in shipping, lumber and the railroad. As you stroll the historic neighborhood that surrounds the Florida House, you'll be enchanted by the graceful homes and mansions of this era. You'll also see the harbor which first lured swash-buckling parties to our island. Later, tourists seeking pleasure, not peril, arrived to our Florida beach aboard steamships. Our historic port also gave birth to the shrimp industry, which continues to thrive here today. |
